Songs of Emancipation: Exploring Juneteenth through Music

Celebrate and explore the history and importance of Juneteenth, and commemorate of the end of slavery in the United States. Enjoy a musical performance of African American spirituals, Swahili songs and Mau Mau rebellion songs by tenor Sylvester Makobi and pianist Claudia Santana Núñez. Afterwards, Dr. Michael Cartwright will lead a conversation framed by the songs “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson and Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.”
