Library Assistant (Part-time)

Overview 

The Brown County Public Library is looking for an energetic, detail oriented, and highly motivated team player as a Library Assistant. This position provides circulation services directly to the public, provides staff support to maintain quality library operations, and enriches patron experiences by providing friendly and helpful library services. 

Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree with some college level library classes. (Preferred but not required) 
  2. GED/High School Diploma. (Required) 
  3. Previous library experience with Indiana certification LC6 or higher. (Preferred but not required) 

Requirements 

  1. Must be reliable and punctual. 
  2. Satisfactory criminal history background check. 
  3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and staff members. 
  4. Ability to work independently and efficiently, without direct supervision. 
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and public service manners. This includes the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form. 
  6. Must have driver’s license and safe driving record to drive personal vehicle or library van to programming sites, if required. 
  7. Evening and weekend hours required. 
  8. Understanding of computers and general technology. 

Responsibilities 

  1. Provide circulation services, such as checking materials out and in, renewing items, placing, and pulling holds, and shelving library materials. 
  2. Regularly assists library patrons in locating materials, reader’s advisory inquiries, and providing reference support to library patrons of all ages. 
  3. Works collaboratively with other library staff to assist with programs, as needed. 
  4. Assists and instructs library patrons of all ages in the use of library services and resources. 
  5. Assists the public with the use of public computers. 
  6. Maintains both routine clerical duties and specialized tasks. 
  7. Participates in meetings and conferences with other library personnel. 
  8. Cooperates as a team member with all library staff in performing any duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
