Book Reviews for Adult Summer Reading
Adult summer reading is underway. Many of those who have signed up know they can receive an additional Grand Prize entry form by writing a book review. The Book reviews are anonymous and are in a folder by the Novel Bunch Books. Feel free to read them. This is an opportunity for me to submit a review of one of my favorite books. You’ll find it in the library if you find it interesting.
Tolkien and the Great War by John Garth
I think anyone interested in the life of J.R.R. Tolkien should defiantly read this book. I have discovered the answer to so many questions that have been on my mind. A few things I have learned about his life are a surprise to me. Not only is this book a biography of Tolkien’s life but also an historical work of the firsthand accounts of WW1 and insight into the minds of the young men who fought in the trenches of that war.
John Garth has done a superb job of telling the story of Tolkien’s life the way I believe he would have wanted it told. Not only did John Garth consider WW1 to be the threshold of middle-earth, he brings to the world the other side of war, that glory is not just the winning, but the way it is won. The fiction of Tolkien brings this to light. And the heroes of war can be found each day of our daily lives. Through devotion to each other school friends find strength to carry on during the most difficult time of their lives. Tolkien holds the one element that joins them and us all: our language.
Being an English professor at Oxford University, Tolkien lived his life never diverting from the one thing that he wanted to spend the rest of his life doing. That was creating a language that created a world.
